By Nerys Arch Environmental Manager
We had our annual EMS external audit recently, this visit was successful and we are pleased to have continued registration to ISO 14001.
The auditor reported that Boningale continue to operate an effective Environmental Management System which is clearly well managed and controlled. Every year Boningale has numerous improvements to demonstrate the on-going commitment to this standard.
During the site walk, the use of bark toppings was discussed and observed, this was introduced January 2015 and is now in use on all potted plants. This has had a significant effect in reducing the use of herbicides throughout the site.
Waste along with other environmental impacts are monitored and reported to all staff annually.
Waste recycling has increased this year.
Environmental Objectives are set each year; these are areas to focus on to improve our Environmental performance. One of the nine Objectives this year is reduce our paper usage. Boningale has recently invested in a Customer Relationship Management System and this will play a major part in the reduction paper use.
In 2015 the ISO 14001 Standard was revised with some significant changes in the management system to be made, these changes embed the system into the strategic planning of the business.
We have three years to put this in place but the auditor commented that Boningale have made a promising start to transitioning of ISO14001 to the 2015 standard.
We are pleased that we will be ready to conduct the transition audit at the re-certification in May 2016.
