Boningale GreenSky is celebrating success after triumphing in the prestigious UK Grower Awards 2014 for its innovations in the green roof sector.
Boningale GreenSky, the green roof department of Shropshire-based Boningale Nurseries set up in partnership with the University of Sheffield Green Roof Centre, picked up the Best Business Innovation at the ceremony in London.
The glittering ceremony at the Grand Connaught Rooms, which celebrates the best in the UK production horticulture industry, applauded GreenSky for its innovative online selector tool, which helps landscape architects and contractors to choose the most appropriate plants and growing medium for their green roofs.
The online guide, which also offers advice and tips to growers, was produced as part of the company’s development of the unique SkyPlugs and SkySuperstrates, which are transforming the way in which green roofs are planned and created.
SkyPlugs are plug plants specifically devised for green roofs. Instead of being grown in unsuitable rich, fibrous peat, they are in a mix of peat-free growing medium and substrate, which mimic the conditions they are to be planted in.
The company’s groundbreaking SkySuperstrates enables green roof installers to choose the ideal medium, according to local rainfall levels and required maintenance, which is radically changing the way in which landscape architects can plan their green roofs.
Maggie Fennell, Technical Green Roof Expert at Boningale GreenSky, said she was thrilled that the products were being recognised for their innovation in the sector.
“Our online tools and guides are making it even easier for landscape architects to select the best plants and substrates for their location,” she said.
“The radically different products that we are creating for the green roof sector is making a real difference to those who are involved in the building of these eco-friendly gardens and we are absolutely thrilled that our contribution has been formally recognised by the judges at the UK Grower Awards is phenomenal,” she said.
“It’s testament to the hard work that everyone at Boningale GreenSky has done over the past few years to develop products that help green roofs to thrive and so contribute positively to the ecology of the areas where they are planted.”
